Different fire extinguisher types
The right fire equipment can be the first defence against a fire hazard. Properly using a portable fire extinguisher can reduce or eliminate the degree of injury, damage and cost to business in the event of a small fire. However, it is essential to understand which extinguisher type should be used.
The coloured band around the extinguisher identifies the type of suppression used:
- Black Band (carbon dioxide) is suitable for (E) and Class B fires. This extinguisher has a noisy and cold discharge, and users should be aware of the discharge pressure.
- Red No Band (water) is only suitable for Class A and not safe for other classes of fire.
- Blue Band (foam) is only suitable for Class A and B fires.
- Oatmeal Band (wet chemical) is suitable for Class A and F fires.
- White Band (dry powder) suitable for Class A fires, Class B flammable liquid fires, Class C fires, Class D metal fires, and Class (E) fires.
- Yellow Band (vaporising liquids) is suitable for (E), Class A, and Class B fires.
Knowing which equipment best suits your workplace is essential to meet regulations and protect workers’ lives.
However, being equipped to prevent flames from engulfing your business premises first requires understanding the different fire types and how each should be treated, remembering that not all fires or extinguishers are the same.
What are fire classes?
Fires are divided into six classes, according to what fuelled the fire. Categorising fuels in this way can help to identify the type of extinguisher required.
Class A: Wood, Paper & Plastic
Fires can involve any material that has a burning ember or leaves an ash such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, many plastics, etc.
Class B: Flammable & Combustible Liquids
Fires involve flammable liquids and petroleum gases such as motor oil, paint thinner, dry cleaning agents, etc. Flammable liquids do not ignite in the liquid state but rather it is the vapours being generated by these liquids that ignite.
Class C: Flammable Gases
Fires involve flammable gases such as “LPG” Liquid Petroleum Fuels, Propane, etc.
Class D: Flammable Metals
Fires involve exotic metals such as sodium, magnesium, and titanium. These fires require specials agents and special application techniques different from agents and techniques used on Class “A”, “B”, or “E” fires. Some agents like water will actually react to burning metals and increase the intensity of the fire in a violent manner.
Class E: Electrical
Fires involve live electrical equipment and require the use of an extinguishing agent and/or extinguisher that will not conduct electricity.
Class F: Cooking Oils & Fats
Fires involve combustible cooking media such as vegetable or animal oils and fats. These fires require wet chemical extinguishers that have superior cooling capabilities to lower the temperature of the cooking medium below its auto ignition point.

They are the most widely used type of fire extinguisher suited for fires occurring in the house, boat, garage, car or caravan.

MODEL B570 contains a special blended Sodium Chloride-based dry powder extinguishing agent.
Heat from the fire causes it to cake and form a crust excluding air and dissipating heat from burning metal. Metal fires involving magnesium, sodium, potassium, and sodium-potassium alloys can be successfully extinguished with this extinguisher.
There is data showing that zirconium, uranium, titanium, and powdered aluminum fires can be controlled and extinguished with this unique extinguisher.

MODEL B571
MODEL B571 contains a copper extinguishing agent specially developed by the U.S. Navy for fighting lithium and lithium alloy fires.
The copper compound smothers the fire and provides an excellent heat sink for dissipating heat. Copper powder has been found to be superior to all other known fire extinguishing agents for lithium metal fires.
Not recommended for lithium-ion battery fires.

Different fire extinguisher types
The right fire equipment can be the first defence against a fire hazard. Properly using a portable fire extinguisher can reduce or eliminate the degree of injury, damage and cost to business in the event of a small fire. However, it is essential to understand which extinguisher type should be used.
The coloured band around the extinguisher identifies the type of suppression used:
- Black Band (carbon dioxide) is suitable for (E) and Class B fires. This extinguisher has a noisy and cold discharge, and users should be aware of the discharge pressure.
- Red No Band (water) is only suitable for Class A and not safe for other classes of fire.
- Blue Band (foam) is only suitable for Class A and B fires.
- Oatmeal Band (wet chemical) is suitable for Class A and F fires.
- White Band (dry powder) suitable for Class A fires, Class B flammable liquid fires, Class C fires, Class D metal fires, and Class (E) fires.
- Yellow Band (vaporising liquids) is suitable for (E), Class A, and Class B fires.

Class A: Wood, Paper & Plastic
Fires can involve any material that has a burning ember or leaves an ash such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, many plastics, etc.Class B: Flammable & Combustible Liquids
Fires involve flammable liquids and petroleum gases such as motor oil, paint thinner, dry cleaning agents, etc. Flammable liquids do not ignite in the liquid state but rather it is the vapours being generated by these liquids that ignite.Class C: Flammable Gases
Fires involve flammable gases such as “LPG” Liquid Petroleum Fuels, Propane, etc.Class D: Flammable Metals
Fires involve exotic metals such as sodium, magnesium, and titanium. MODEL B571 contains a copper extinguishing agent specially developed by the U.S. Navy for fighting lithium and lithium alloy fires.
