Fire Extinguishers & Blankets

Introduction

Fire System Services offers a comprehensive range of portable fire extinguishers to suit all types of classes of fires.
There are eight different types of fire extinguishers, in three group types available in Australia.

Dry Powder Type Fire Extinguishers

Dry Chemical ABE,  Dry Chemical BE,  Dry Chemical D Type for metal & battery fires.

Gas Type Fire Extinguishers

Carbon Dioxide,  Vaporising Liquid.

Wet Type Fire Extinguishers

Foam,  Water,  Wet Chemical.

Different fire extinguisher types

The right fire equipment can be the first line of defence against a fire hazard. With proper use a portable fire extinguisher can reduce or eliminate the degree of injury, damage and cost to business in the event of a small fire, however, it is essential to understand which extinguisher type should be used.

The coloured band around the extinguisher identifies the type of suppression used:

  • Red (water) only suitable for Class A and not safe on other classes of fire.
  • Blue (foam) only suitable for Class A and B fires.
  • White (dry powder) suitable for Class A fires, Class B flammable liquid fires, Class C gas fires, Class D metal fires, Class (E) electrical fires.
  • Black (carbon dioxide) suitable for (E) and Class B fires. This extinguisher has a noisy and cold discharge, and users should beware of discharge pressure.
  • Yellow (vaporising liquids) suitable for (E), Class A fires, and Class B fires.
  • Oatmeal (wet chemical) suitable for Class A and F fires.

Knowing which equipment is best suited for your workplace is important in order to meet regulations and protect the lives of workers.
However, being equipped to prevent flames from engulfing your business premises first requires an understanding of the different fire types, and how each should be treated, remembering that not all fires, or extinguishers, are the same.

What are fire classes?

Fires are divided into six classes, according to what fuelled the fire. Categorising fuels in this way can help to identify the type of extinguisher required.

Class A: Wood, Paper & Plastic
Fires can involve any material that has a burning ember or leaves an ash such as wood, paper, cloth, rubber, many plastics, etc.

fire and safety services

Class B: Flammable & Combustible Liquids
Fires involve flammable liquids and petroleum gases such as motor oil, paint thinner, dry cleaning agents, etc. Flammable liquids do not ignite in the liquid state but rather it is the vapours being generated by these liquids that ignite.

Class C: Flammable Gases
Fires involve flammable gases such as “LPG” Liquid Petroleum Fuels, Propane, etc.

Class D: Flammable Metals
Fires involve exotic metals such as sodium, magnesium, and titanium. These fires require specials agents and special application techniques different from agents and techniques used on Class “A”, “B”, or “E” fires. Some agents like water will actually react to burning metals and increase the intensity of the fire in a violent manner.

class e fire symbol

Class E: Electrical
Fires involve live electrical equipment and require the use of an extinguishing agent and/or extinguisher that will not conduct electricity.

Class F: Cooking Oils & Fats
Fires involve combustible cooking media such as vegetable or animal oils and fats. These fires require wet chemical extinguishers that have superior cooling capabilities to lower the temperature of the cooking medium below its auto ignition point.

Fire Blanket for Kitchen Fires

Fire Blankets

Fire Blankets

Sizes: 1.0m x 1.0m | 1.2m x 1.2m | 1.2m x 1.8m | 1.8m x 1.8m

Fire Blankets are ideal for settings where small Class F fires are a risk such as in kitchens or wherever oils or fats are exposed to potential ignition. They can also be used if a person’s clothing has caught fire.

A Fire Blanket cuts off a fire’s supply of oxygen, smothering it either permanently or until more effective fire-fighting equipment can be employed.

As with any emergency situation, you should alert others to the fire, evacuate the area and have someone contact the fire department in case the fire cannot be extinguished. You should also ensure that you have an escape route – the fire should not be between you and the exit.

Open the fire blanket and hold it in front of you to shield your body, hands and face from the fire. Cover the burning material completely, ensuring there are no gaps for oxygen to reach the fire. Shut off any gas or other fuel supply involved in the fire, and contact the fire department if you have not done so already. Leave the blanket in place for at least 30 minutes to allow the oil or fat to cool.

Always read the instructions for your Fire Blanket before use.

Note: Fire Blankets are not designed for re-use! It is essential that you dispose of your Fire Blanket once it has been employed.

SOLAS Marine Fire Extinguishers
SOLAS Fire Extinguishers for Marine Usage

SOLAS Approved Marine

SOLAS MARINE APPROVED FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

SOLAS Approved fire extinguishers are needed for many vessels. In accordance with AS 1851 fire extinguishers must be inspected every six months.

The types of Marine fire extinguishers approved include dry chemical, foam, carbon dioxide.

The equipment on your vessel and your boat’s construction are factors in determining which extinguisher would be most effective.

Be sure to discuss your fire extinguisher options with a trained professional to choose the best fire safety devices for your application.

Dry Chemical Powder Fire Extinguishers are suitable for fighting class A,B and E fires. ABE powder extinguishers have a very good fire fighting capacity.
AFFF Foam Class A:B extinguisher. Apply to Class B liquid spills to prevent ignition. Ideal for emergency first response.
Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers are the best kitchen fire extinguishers. They have been tested and approved for Class F specifically for kitchen hazards. They contain a potassium acetate based agent.
Carbon Dioxide is discharged as a white cloud of “snow” which smothers a fire by eliminating oxygen. It is effective for Class B flammable liquids and is electrically non-conductive. Carbon Dioxide is a clean, non-contaminating, odorless gas.

To Help Stop Theft, Vandalism or Misuse of Fire Extinguishers

If you are fed up with replacing your fire extinguishers, this sturdy, tamperproof, self-contained device is the answer.

It has proven highly effective in helping stop theft, misuse or vandalism of fire extinguishers. Yet, it leaves the extinguisher totally accessible for emergencies and does not interfere with fire fighting in any way.

How It Works

Fire Blankets

Fire Blankets
