Gas Cylinder Design Verification and Registration

What Do We Do?

As accredited service providers, the technicians at National Hydro Cylinder Testing Services are here to perform Gas Cylinder Testing and Certification in Adelaide.

We operate and manage an approved gas cylinder test station, number 720, and specialize in all aspects of Gas Cylinder Tests and Refills.

We can assist clients who have imported gas cylinders into the Commonwealth of Australia and require the Gas Cylinder to be registered before the first fill.

In Australia, the relevant Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) authorities in each state, in line with AS2030 and AS2337, require that each gas cylinder is registered with the gas cylinder test scheme.

The gas cylinders receive and hold a design registration number that is permanently marked upon the gas cylinder.

Purchasing cylinders from an overseas manufacturer and importing them to Australia is just a small part of the process; several steps need to be completed before a gas cylinder can be filled.

First Test Stamp and First Fill

Prior to any gas cylinder’s first hydrostatic test or first fill, the Design Approval number must be permanently marked on each cylinder.

These markings are accompanied by the registered Gas Cylinder Test Station stamp that is applied to ensure traceability throughout the cylinder’s life.

Mechanical Design Verification

Mechanical Design Verification confirms the suitability of a gas cylinder for its intended service by examining the manufacturer’s drawings, design calculations, raw product test records, cylinder test records, and type-testing certification.

This information comprises a technical data package to ensure compliance with the cylinder design and the manufacturing standard used in its production.

This task is carried out by a certified Mechanical Engineer.

Design Registration

Once verified, the cylinder design must be registered with the WHS authority in your state.

The registration process varies based on the requirements set out by each WHS authority.

Assuming it meets all the technical specifications, the cylinder design is approved for testing and filling in Australia.

A unique Design Approval number remains relevant to all gas cylinders produced under the registered design.

Pre-Registration & Hydrostatic Test Checklist

For the design registration to be completed and registered, We will require the cylinder technical design drawings with the following information:

  1. Type test certificate
  2. Design calculations (as per the applicable design standard)
