Liferaft Gas Cylinder
Testing & Refilling

What We Do

Fire System Services, also known as National Hydro Cylinder Testing Services, offers a wide range of gases to meet the needs of organisations in the maritime & aviation industry for Liferaft Inflation Gas Cylinder Testing and Refilling.

The workshop facility at Fire System Services is equipped to handle your Liferaft Inflation Gas Cylinder Testing and Refill Services in Australia.

We operate and manage an approved gas cylinder test station, number 720.

We specialise in all aspects of maritime gas cylinder testing and refilling, with a focus on Maritime & Aviation Gas Cylinder Testing, Including Gas Boosting and Refill Services.

With over 35 years of experience, we are well-equipped to meet your Maritime & Aviation Liferaft Inflation Gas Cylinder Testing and Refilling Requirements in Australia.

About Us

Liferaft gas cylinder refills require certified hydrostatic testing and specialized refilling equipment that uses nitrogen or a nitrogen/CO2 blend to prevent valves from freezing during inflation.

Because of these strict tolerances and the specialized gas mixtures required, this maintenance must be performed exclusively by accredited liferaft marine workshop facilities.

Fire System Services, operating alongside its specialised division, National Hydro Cylinder Testing Services, provides comprehensive maintenance, inspection, and precision refilling for marine and aviation liferaft inflation cylinders.

Because emergency deployment requires absolute reliability under freezing marine conditions, their technicians use high-purity gases—typically nitrogen or a precisely balanced carbon dioxide (CO2) mixture—to ensure instant inflation without freezing the regulator valves.

Operating from our accredited Cylinder Test Station (GCT 720) in Wingfield, Adelaide, the company conducts rigorous hydrostatic pressure testing to verify the structural integrity of steel, aluminium, and composite cylinders.

Following successful recertification, cylinders are refilled using specialised equipment, accurately weighed to exact manufacturer tolerances, and officially certified to meet strict regulatory and OEM compliance standards.

Aviation Life Raft Gas Cylinder Refills & Testing

Fire System Services is capable of performing inflation gas refills, including nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

Nitrogen is the gas of choice for inflation systems for escape slides and life rafts due to its inert and non-explosive nature.

The inflation system typically consists of a pressurised gas cylinder, a regulating valve, two high-pressure hoses, and two aspirators, with the size of the slide determining the size of the gas cylinder.

Carbon dioxide is used to regulate the rate at which the valve expands the gases.

Inflation gas cylinders undergo periodic testing, typically every three years.

LSI UNI-PAC Air Drop Survival Kit

Aviation Fire Systems Australia (Fire System Services) provides specialist maintenance support for the LSI UNI-PAC II & LSI UNI-PAC III Search and Rescue System used by the Boeing P-8A Poseidon fleet.

Our capabilities include inspection, testing, certification, and gas cylinder refilling of life raft inflation cylinders, helping operators maintain mission readiness and compliance with OEM servicing requirements.

UNI-PAC III

The Boeing P-8A Poseidon uses the LSI UNI-PAC III Search and Rescue (SAR) System, a deployable aviation life raft and survival package designed by Life Support International (LSI).  The system is carried within the aircraft’s weapons bay and can be air-dropped to support survivors during maritime search and rescue operations. The UNI-PAC III has been qualified for service with both the United States Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

UNI-PAC II

The UNI-PAC II is a multi-mission air-drop kit packaged in a single, semi-rigid, fully adjustable cylindrical canister.

It is designed to contain supplies and/or equipment, depending on the mission. The equipment may include a life raft configured to deploy automatically during delivery.

Various aircraft applications include, but are not limited to, the C-130, P-3 Orion, CASA-212, CASA CN235, CASA C-295, S-3 Viking, C7-C-V2 Caribou, C-47, Antonov AN-32, and Fokker F-27.

Helicopter Float Cylinder Refills & Testing

Helicopter gas cylinder floats, or Emergency Flotation Systems (EFS), are inflatable devices used to prevent helicopters from sinking if they land on water.

These systems are inflated using compressed gas stored in pressurized cylinders carried on board the helicopter.

The inflatable floats can be packaged inside the helicopter’s airframe or mounted externally on the skids or lower structure.

Fire System Services is capable of performing gas cylinder testing and refills for helicopter float cylinders, which are filled with high-pressure helium gas.

Gas Boosting

Our professional gas boosting services are designed to safely boost gases up to 8000 psi / 55,115  kPa / 551.8 bar, in high-pressure gas cylinders.

We utilize specialized equipment to ensure efficient and reliable gas transfer while upholding strict safety and quality standards.

Our services cater to a diverse range of industries, including Aviation, Industrial & Commercial, and specialized applications that demand precise high-pressure filling.

The test station is capable of performing gas boosting for various gas types, including:

  • Argon
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Helium
  • Hydrogen
  • Nitrogen

Gas Refills

The test station is capable of performing gas refills for various gas types, including:

  • Argon
  • Brreathable Air
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Halotron (Fire Extinguishers)
  • Helium
  • Inflation Gas (N2/CO2)
  • Nitrogen
  • Oxygen (Aviation Grade)
