Fire Hose Reels

Fire hose reels are the first attack fire equipment used to supplement fire extinguishers.

They are designed to be used to extinguish a small wood/paper-based fire or to contain a fire while an area is evacuated.

They should not be used on fires involving electricity, cooking fats, or petrol/oil.

South Australian regulations (1) typically only require fire hose reels to be installed in buildings greater than 500 square meters(2).

Fire hose reels should be located within 4 meters of an exit from the building and be no further than 40 meters from any part of the building(3).

Fire System Services can undertake a review of your site and advise you if you require hose reels and where they should be located.

Once installed fire hose reels should be regularly maintained. The minimum maintenance requirements as documented in South Australian legislation and regulations (4) are:

• 6 monthly test
• Annual test where the hose is fully unwound and water flow readings are taken

Reporting & Record Keeping

A necessary provision in Australian Standard AS1851 Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment is to keep records of the service work carried out as evidence that the systems and equipment fit the intended purpose.

Fire System Services utilises an asset management program to assist clients; the company uses Uptick for Asset Management.

The Platform provides real-time reporting, a feature that ensures our customers are always up to date and confident in the efficiency of their Essential Safety Provisions within the building.

Upon completion, test reports will be emailed to the customer. Historical Data, including invoices, can be viewed and downloaded via a Free Access Customer Portal.

The asset management software program has been meticulously designed to meet all versions of AS1851 and other state-based legislative requirements, ensuring our clients feel secure and well-informed.
